Curling your own hair takes a lot of effort for results that may not even last very long if your hair is not naturally curly. Add to that the risk of damage if it goes wrong, or that you may not like the style if you’ve never actually tried it before, and curling a wig instead starts to look like a wiser option. Here are some top tips to help you do it successfully using a curling iron.
1. Use the right temperature
Once you’ve placed your wig on the mannequin head and removed any knots and tangles in the hair, the next thing to do before you begin is make sure that your curling iron is heated to the correct temperature. This is a temperature that’s low enough not to cause any damage but which still curls the hair well. Start at around 82 degrees Celsius and test the iron in a discreet place, i.e. not around the front or top of the wig.
2. Section using a rat-tail comb
You need to divide the hair up into sections that you will curl one at a time. You can do this by using a rat-tail comb to lift up a section and then hold it in place with a clip. The size of each section will determine the type of curls that you achieve. If you create large sections, these will result in large, loose curls. Smaller sections create tight curls.
3. Start from the bottom layer of hair
Create curls by wrapping sections of hair around the iron and keeping them there for a few seconds. With your free hand, which should be wearing a protective glove, hold the hair in place after you remove the iron. This will help them to stay in place, and you should also apply some hairspray for the same reason.
4. Let the wig cool naturally
Once all the curls have been made and are pinned in place on the wig, leave everything in place until it’s cool to the touch. Then you can take out the pins and lightly brush the wig to make the curls look natural. You can then make the style stick in place more firmly with some more hairspray, holding it at least 20cm away to avoid too much product building up on the hair.
Conclusion
These simple steps should be able to help you achieve the curled look that you’re going for, but you could also consider a wand curl wig which comes pre-curled in a style of your choice and is likely to stay that way for longer.
